My name is Nancy Parmar. On July 26th, 2013, I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia. This type of leukemia has no cure and relies heavily on the use experimental drug trials. For about a month and a half, I was in denial and even fell into depression many times. Scared to open up and be treated differently from who I was before, I told many people I was just “sick” and had a “long road to recovery.” Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating and life altering for anyone. I have been blessed by God’s grace with a wonderful family and amazing friends who have showered me with infinite love and confidence. I could never be more grateful for their support during these trying times. It is with their support along with meeting cancer survivors such as, Elona Karafin, who have helped me accept myself. The type of AML I have is due to a FLT3+ and MML mutation. According to the doctors, in a matter of a week, my genes had mutated into this rare condition. It is not hereditary as nobody in my family has ever had history of such a cancer. This sounds all too scientific but it helps to understand why I’m asking for your help. Chemotherapies and trial oral pills may make my cell counts lower but if these mutations are not signaled to turn off with these trial drugs, the cancer continues to grow. Thankfully, insurance has covered the costs of the necessary medications I required so far. The only way to overcome this disease for good is to undergo a bone marrow transplant. The search alone, ranges from $10,000 to $60,000 and only grants cover it. However, grants rarely cover even half the cost. Then comes the cost for the actual transplant, which depends on who the donor is and where the match is coming from. Unfortunately, my sister was not a match and my parents are only half matches. I would need umbilical cord blood to compensate for the half matches and even then that would be the second best option. We are looking for a 10/10 antigen match, a search that hasn’t been very successful, so I won’t relapse and have to go through another transplant. I ask sincerely and from the bottom of my heart to help me and my family, who has been by my side day and night, to raise enough money for (ONLY) my bone marrow search, as it is costly enough. Ever since I have been diagnosed, my mom, especially, who has not gone back to work, has not left my side once. My dad who has been disabled from a car accident in March, comes everyday regardless of his own pain with a ride from my cousin, Prashant. My sister supports our household as she works and goes to school and last but especially not the least, my cousin Angel who stays over everyday to help me do everyday things I can no longer do regardless of her school schedule and my cousin Sonia who stays over to help during the weekends. These people have given up their every day or weekday to help me see another day and together we ask for your help because we cannot do it alone. Donations aren’t the only way you can help. Blood and platelet donations are also a way to help me and many others here at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Simply sharing or liking this page is a great way to show your support for me. Signing up at a bone marrow registry can increase the chances for me as well as others in need of bone marrow matches. I can cer-vive this and so can they. Thank you very much. Without EACH AND EVERY SINGLE ONE of you, this can not be possible so I urge you to help Checkmate, Cancer and I reach our goal. Let’s save lives together.

Hi Nancy. I don’t think we know each other personally or even as acquaintances. But I know of your current status and have heard of you through my parents, Cornelius and Shillah Christy.
Just want to tell you that you are in my prayers. Jesus Christ is the rock and strong fortress that’s holding you and will continue to uplift you in His care. I occasionally attend a church in NJ and during one of the services, the pastor conducted a healing service. Even though I don’t “know” you, I claimed your name and one other person’s name in my prayers for miraculous healing. Please stay strong and I applaud you for your perseverance and determination to fight this illness. Nothing is impossible for Jesus Christ.
    With prayer

Nancy, even though I don’t know you personally, I heard your story through Brooklyn College, which I currently attend, and your story touched my heart very much. I had a cousin who was diagnosed with leukemia and it’s a tough battle but know that there are many generous people out there who are willing to help and support you. You just have to keep staying STRONG, never losing your FAITH. Always keep your perseverance and determination to fight this illness because with God’s GRACE anything is possible.
    My prayers are with you.

All of us at the office are thinking of you and praying for you. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do; we would like to put up notices for blood donation and or your marrow screening drive in the waiting room (if it is ok with you of course) to try to get the word out about your fight. If you have a flyer and you feel comfortable with us putting it up then just say the word and consider it done. You are a part of our little dental family so we want to do our part.
In the meantime, just focus on getting better. It isn’t easy, but you are in the right place and you can do it.
    Hang in there!

Hi Nancy, You are in our prayers every single day and likewise other folks are praying for you. Prayer turns the stumbling blocks into building blocks. I applaud your courage. You have exceptional courage with enduring power to cope each day at a time and your strength is from the Lord and your parents on your side. Nothing is impossible with God. Jesus is our healer. Here is a quote to inspire you…. Courage is the capacity to confront what can be imagined. Stay Strong…..Eva Aunty

I met Nancy in the 5th grade when I transferred to a new school. I was very shy and didn’t meet or had much friends, but I do remember Nancy as being one of them. I always remembered her as very pretty and smart. We went to the same JHS but we didn’t talk much anymore. I can’t believe it’s been years since I’ve last seen her. I also can’t believe something like this happened to such a bright and friendly person. I wish you the best Nancy!

Nancy, I also had AML. I was diagnosed on september 28, 2010 at the age of 27. I had several rounds of intense chemo and had a bone marrow transplant on February 2, 2011. My donor is from Germany. I try to spread awareness of the donor registry often & will share your story in hopes of getting more people to sign up. I will pray for you & your family, that a match is found for you so you can have the transplant. I wish you all the best & stay strong, you can beat this! It will not be easy but you can do it! You have a great support system & very many people praying for you!

To Nancy’s friends and family: You guys are so awesome for keeping her spirits lifted and for showing her such true love.

Is there a way that I can check to see if I am a match for Nancy? I am not in New York state but if you tell me how I can go about TODAY and get checked. Please advise via email.
